Course

DES 401 focuses on collaborative urban studies, with weight on real-world observation, analysis, and critical inquiry. Our cohort is to engage in site investigations and mappings to examine pre-existing conditions and the socio-economic, political, and environmental relationships that determine and shape urban spaces. We are encouraged to nourish our critical thinking and innovative representation through sketches, photography, and mappings, forming a foundational understanding of urban dynamics as groundwork for subsequent project modules that build on these analyses.

Learning Expectations

Develop research and observational skills in urban studies.
Analyze and critique urban conditions at multiple scales.
Propose innovative design interventions based on critical inquiry.
Collaborate effectively in group settings to create cohesive research outputs

Evaluation

The course also explores the use of generative AI tools in urban design. Active participation, sketchbook submissions, and project uploads are essential, with grading heavily focused on process, media use, and completeness.
