Course

In this extensive exploration of design theory, we’re immersing ourselves in the connections between precedents, types, and the genesis of design forms. By intertwining specific case studies with overarching themes like Space, Program, Material, and Context, we’re delving into the profound layers of theoretical design. Our exploration is enriched by a variety of readings, discussions, and practical analyses.

Key Themes

  1. Space - Dissection of geometry, structure, and function
  2. Program - Unveiling the complexities of single and hybrid functions, and agendas
  3. Materials - Surveying the spectrum from physical to ephemeral elements and assembly processes
  4. Context - Examining the interplay between physical, political, and cultural dimensions in design

Teaching Approach

  • Lectures: Our deep-dives into precedents and types illuminate the nuances of analysis and personal categorization. The additional 12 thematic lectures navigate us through the foundational themes
  • Journaling: We’re evolving our notetaking methods to encapsulate the essence of core concepts and their interrelationships
  • Digital Resources: With all lecture slides accessible online, we’re maintaining a distraction-free learning environment in class
  • Pop Questions: Our classes commence with concise reflections, anchoring our insights from the preceding sessions
  • Reading Reflections: Throughout our 13 readings, we’re engaged in tailored reflection tasks, embracing the diverse narrative structures and adapting our interpretative lenses

Term Project

Our term project is a dynamic intersection of presentation, diagram, and model, each stage unveiling a new layer of understanding. Diagrams in our journey aren’t limited to drawings; we’re also exploring the power of physical models. These models, although challenging and time-intensive, are vital expressive tools, revealing compelling insights when meticulously crafted. Whether scaled or abstract, static or interactive, each model we create serves as a clear, focused analytical representation, unraveling various facets of our precedent step-by-step.

Together, we’re deciphering the realms of design theory, integrating traditional discussions with hands-on exercises. It's our shared exploration, poised to refine our comprehension and expertise in the design world.
