We are tasked with observing and recording open space and built form at a site on UBC's campus. The objective is to practice critical interpretation and observation using various methods to capture the flow of information at all levels—below, on, and above the site. The assignment involves using the Cube Method to study the infrastructure and elements of the site.
The site plan will be drawn at a 1:200 scale, including buildings, open spaces, and elements such as cars for scale comparison. Additionally, infrastructure components like electricity, water, gas, internet, and roads will be incorporated into the analysis.
Learning Expectations
- Develop critical observation skills by investigating the site through different methods.
- Explore and understand the relationship between built form and open space.
- Analyze and represent the infrastructure within the site using the Cube Method.
- Enhance visual communication through analog and digital drawings, as well as photography and collage techniques.
Deliverables
- 1:200 Site Plan & Section
- Include buildings, open spaces, infrastructure, and scale elements.
- Ensure the scale is clear and include a scale bar and north arrow where appropriate.
- Cube Axonometric
- A drawing that demonstrates your understanding of the Cube Method as it applies to infrastructure within the site.
- A drawing that demonstrates your understanding of the Cube Method as it applies to infrastructure within the site.
- Photography/Collage
- A visual documentation of the site visit, capturing observations for analysis.
These deliverables can be created using a combination of analog and digital methods, with flexibility in the number of drawings. Students are encouraged to adjust the scale and add any additional drawings needed to support their observations. The final submission should be posted on the course blog.
Process / Intention
Here I wanted to explore the world under the trees and what used to be. inspired by the forest image on google gloe view i found it peculiar that it hadnt been updated to the current built environment that feels wrong somehow when you are visiting it. things feel out of scale and out of place. materials not appropriatly utilized or connected to the right functions if that makes snese. After a bit of a walk, crossing the street we noticed a stump in the concrete brick ground. that took my eyes toward the basketball court and the formwork further on. and then we stumbled upon a family of nurse logs mostly cedar and hemlock combinations. I was insoired to explore what could be there and visualize that throught he cube method.
You’ll find the drawings I used to scan and add into illustrator. Personally I like the drawn ones better. But it was worth a short anyway with the limited time of one week.
